Sage splits action at Skyline Conference Tri-match

Throggs Neck, NY--The Sage College's women's volleyball team travelled to Maritime College for a Skyline Conference Tri-match on Saturday. The Gators faced defending league champions, NYU-Poly in the first match of the day, but fell 3-1 (19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 25-10). Sage finished the day with a convincing 3-0 win over their hosts, the Privateers of Maritime College (25-17, 25-20, 25-18). Sage stands at 13-19 overall, while wrapping Skyline Conference play with a 4-5 record.

Against the Fighting Blue Jays of NYU-Poly, freshman Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) tallied another double-double as she had 10 kills with 17 digs. Rookie Stacey Forte (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood) added eight kills, while senior libero Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) added 17 digs.

Sage's sophomore setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) added 20 setting assists in the contest.

In the nightcap, Putriment finished with another double-double effort, her 12th of the season after racking up 10 kills and 11 digs. Cooney handed 21 setting assists and now has 801 on the season. Cooney now ranks fourth at Sage with 1,360 career setting assists, while her season total for 2011 is eighth best.  

Wilson added nine digs, putting her as 1,617 on her career which is third on the Sage career list. Her 428 digs on the 2011 campaign lead the Gators.

Forte added six kills in the contest, while rookie Jillian Schwab (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) chipped in five kills to defeat the Privateers.

Sage takes to the court again at Utica College on October 26 in a 7 p.m. non-conference road match.
