Sage sweeps play on Saturday in women's volleyball action

Troy, NY--The Sage College's women's volleyball team hosted the Cougars of Medgar Evers College and the Pioneers of William Paterson University in a non-conference tri-match at the Neff Center on Saturday afternoon.

Sage posted a 2-0 effort of the day as they beat MEC, 3-0 (25-9, 25-4, 25-11) and WPU, 3-0 (25-23, 26-24, 25-18) and improve to 12-17 overall. WPU stands at 15-6 after also beating MEC, 3-0 on Saturday (25-6, 25-8, 25-4). The Cougars drop to 0-17 on the season.

Against MEC, Sage's freshman Jillian Schwab (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius) had eight kills, while also having a perfect attack percentage as she hit 1.00 in the match. Freshman Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) and Stacey Forte (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood) each added seven kills.  

Sage's sophomore setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) added 22 setting assists with three aces and four digs.

Against William Paterson, Putriment led the squad with 17 kills and 22 digs, while Forte had 10 kills with an ace and a block assist. Cooney chipped in with 22 setting assists and now 743 on the season, a personal best for the co-captain.

Freshman Serena Heard (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) added 15 digs, while Sage's senior libero, Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) racked up 10 digs in the match and now has 1,578 career digs and ranks third all-time for the Gators.

The Gators return to action on Tuesday, October 18 hosting Union College at the Neff Center in a 7 p.m. contest. The night will feature a celebration of the career of senior libero, Kelsey Wilson in conjunction with Senior Night as well as Sage's annual Crankin for  Cure Match and in encouraging all fans in attendance to wear pink as the Gators do their best to help with finding a cure for breast cancer.
