Sage second half rally falls short at RPI in women's hoops

Troy, NY – RPI hosted The Sage College's women's basketball team in the Battle of Troy and took a 76-62 win after a late-game rally from the Gators fell short. RPI improves to 3-3, while Sage stands at 2-3 on the year.

The Engineers led 34-22 at the break, but Sage mounted a second half comeback and pulled within four points twice in the second half. The first time was at 11:44 (48-44) and the second time came at 9:30 (50-46) as junior forward Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central) tallied 12 of her team-best 16 points in the second half. Tironi was perfect on the night making all six shots from the floor and hitting her four three attempts.

Senior guard Megan Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) added 13 points with six rebounds and eight assists for the Gators. Senior forward Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) tallied nine points with five rebounds. Sophomore Frankie Pearson (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) scored eight points with seven boards for Sage, while rookie Gen Schoff (Little Falls, NY/Little) added six points with seven rebounds.

Bowman now has 769 career points and is No. 9 on the all-time scoring list, while adding 343 assists and 198 steals. She stands tied for the No. 4 spot in career steals after tying Wendy Kuhn (198, 1988-1992) on Tuesday and is No. 2 all-time in career assists.

Jefferson is now in sole possession of the No. 3 spot in career rebounds with her 596 boards. She moved past Elizabeth Pearl (591, 1987-1991).

RPI's junior Ashley Clough connected for 22 points to lead the Engineers, while senior Amanda Lynch added a double-double with 16 points and 10 rebounds.

The Gators return to action on November 30 at Southern Vermont College for a 1 p.m. non-conference game.
