Gators fall short 62-60 in Skyline opener to FSC

Albany, NY –The Sage College's women's basketball team hosted the Rams of Farmingdale State College on Friday night in Kahl Gym in a Skyline Conference contest, the first of the year for both teams. The Rams tallied a 62-60 win as junior Marlaina Sherman (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) put in the game-winning lay-up with 5.6 seconds left in regulation to jump out to an early lead in the conference race. FSC improves to 5-7 overall and 1-0 in the league, while Sage drops to 5-4 overall and 0-1 in the conference.

FSC led 23-22 at the break and led by as many as eight points in the second half (43-35, 11:16) before the Gators pulled back into the contest and tied the game at 49 all with 6:32 left to play. The Rams led by five once again at 2:28 (59-54) before Sage tied the action again at 60-60 with 24 seconds left in regulation as senior guard Megan Bowman (Dannemora, NY/Saranac) added a pair of free throws.

Junior guard Andrea Desvignes (Deer Park, NY/Deer Park) missed a jumper before her teammate junior Nailah Cherry (Roosevelt, NY/Roosevelt) hauled in the offensive rebound and gave the ball to Sherman for the game-winning basket.

Desvignes led the Rams in scoring with 20 points and had nine rebounds with four assists and two steals, while Sherman netted 11 points and had four blocks with seven boards. Senior guard Nicole Lanteri (Poughkeepsie, NY/Arlington) had 10 points with four assists and four steals for the Rams.

Sage got a career-high 21 points from junior forward Sara Tironi (Cambridge, NY/Cambridge Central), bettering her previous high of 18 points. She had a double-double with 12 boards and was 11-12 from the line.  Rookie forward Genevieve Schoff (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) added seven points with nine rebounds, while senior forward Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) had three rebounds and is now tied for the No. 2 spot  (633, Susanne Booth, 1994-1998).

The Gators are back in action on Monday night, January 12 hosting SUNY-Old Westbury at 6 p.m. Skyline Conference contest, while FSC hosting SUNY-Old Westbury at 6 p.m. on January 15.
