ALBANY, N.Y. – On a beautiful spring afternoon, Russell Sage College Athletics participated in its annual Yards for Yeardley event to support the One Love Foundation.
Almost 100 student-athletes, coaches, and staff walked 232,320 yards (132 miles) around the Albany campus in remembrance of Yeardley Love, a Virginia Women’s Lacrosse player that was tragically killed by her ex-boyfriend in 2010.
The One Love Foundation is a national non-profit with the goal of ending relationship abuse. The organizations empowers young people with tools and resources to see the signs of healthy and unhealthy relationships and bring life-saving prevention education to their communities.
“We had a great turn out as Sage Athletics united as one to walk in remembrance of Yeardley Love and to pledge yards to the mission of prevention, education, and awareness of intimate partner violence,” said Erica Li, Associate Athletic Director/Senior Woman Administrator. “This is an important annual event for our department and it was great to see so many people and programs participate.”
In addition, the majority of walkers signed the “It's On Us” pledge.
The mission of "It’s On Us" is to build the movement to combat campus sexual assault by engaging all students, including young men, and activating the largest student organizing program of its kind in grassroots awareness and prevention education programs.
The "It's On Us" Movement encourages students:
- To recognize that non-consensual sex is sexual assault
- To identify situations in which sexual assault may occur
- To intervene in situations in which sexual assault may occur
- To create an environment in which sexual assault is unacceptable and survivors are supported
