Sage’s Teran Receives Aggie Stillman Perseverance Award

ALBANY The Sage College's department of athletics gathered to recognize and honor the outstanding performances of the 2015-2016 year with the naming of the athletic award winners for the 15 varsity athletic teams. In addition to awarding the Gator Award, for the Most Outstanding Player, the department also named the 2015-2016 Female and Male Athletes of the Year, the Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which is given to the senior student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average, and the Aggie Stillman Perseverance Award.

The Sage Colleges' men's soccer junior, Luis Teran (Farmingville, NY/Newfield) was honored with the Aggie Stillman Perseverance Award.

In her nearly forty year career at Sage, Aggie was a friend, mentor, professor, class advisor, and the Gators' biggest fan.  She radiated pride and enthusiasm in everything she did, while embodying the Sage spirit of patience and perseverance against any and all odds. In her honor, Sage bestows The Aggie Stillman Perseverance Award to the person affiliated with Sage Athletics that best exemplifies those traits which made Aggie so special. Aggie waged a personal battle with cancer for over 20 years finally succumbing to the disease on May 13, 2008.

Teran was a tri-captain for the men's soccer squad that achieved new heights by winning its first Skyline Conference Championship and first NCAA tournament berth.  The central defender totaled two goals, two assists and six points over 20 games. Teran was one of only three players to start every game for the Gators. The junior was named to the NSCAA Division III Men's All-Region Second-Team and the Skyline Conference Second-Team. Teran received these honors after bearing a season ending injury the season prior. While preparing for his senior season this spring, his injury reoccurred. Teran was recognized by the department for his strength and perseverance in overcoming these obstacles.

Assistant Athletic Christine Kemp said of Teran, "We've been honored to work with someone who pushes themselves beyond their limits to achieve their goals. Luis always comes to rehab every day with a smile on his face, and he has nothing but optimism to recover. He has overcome things that not everyone goes through, and what sets him apart is how he approaches these situations with character and opportunity. Luis will always do everything he can to make the most out of any situation and come out on top while inspiring others along the way."

As a sophomore, Teran was named the Skyline Rookie of the Year, and he was awarded the Best Teammate Award in 2014 for his commitment to the team despite his injury. A business major at Sage, Teran has been on the Dean's List multiple times.
