Sage Top Sarah Lawrence 4-0 and Break Single-Season Shutout Record

ALBANY – Derlis Zayas (White Plains, NY/White Plains) scored two goals in Sage's tenth shutout of the season in a 4-0 victory over Sarah Lawrence.

After eight minutes of play, Zayas ripped the first shot of the game, but if was blocked by a Griffin defender.

Sarah Lawrence goalie James Berry came up with two saves in the 16th and 18th minutes to keep Paul Reynoso (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) and James Lagunas (Passaic, NJ/Passaic County Technical) from scoring.

A minute later, Sage goalie TJ Zehner (Beacon, NY/Beacon) recorded his first save of the contest on a shot by Juan Sucre.

Zayas broke the stalemate in the 22nd minute after scoring off a deflected shot from Peter Fabrykiewicz (Delancey, NY/Andes).

The Gators received an insure goal in the 32nd minute to go up 2-0 when River Seybolt (Seldon, NY/Longwood) scored his eighth goal of the year off a Reynoso assist.

Sage came out early in the second half scoring their third goal on a low and away free kick from Reynoso in the 52nd minute.

The Gators took five unanswered shots over 22 minutes before Sarah Lawrence's Varun Kelkar had the Griffins' best opportunity of the game, but he was denied by goalie Chris Dunham (Valley Falls, NY/Grace Christian).

Ten minutes later, Zayas struck again on a shot from 30 yards out to secure the 4-0 victory.

Zehner (10-3-2) was credited with the win while Berry (1-9-3) took the loss on a nine save effort.

The defensive line of Reynoso, Christian Pinti (Slate Hill, NY/Minisink Valley), Luis Teran (Farmingdale, NY/Newfield), Kyle LeClerc (Beacon,NY/Beacon), Joe Diano (Hopewell Junction, NY/John Jay), Andrew Bartoah (New Haven, CT/James Hillhouse) and Ryan Fairweather (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) held the Griffins to a mere two shots in 90 minutes of play.

With tonight's combined shutout from Zehner, Dunham and Caelen Kohut (Ancram, NY/Hudson), the Gators broke their previous 2012 record for most shutouts in a single season. Sage is currently ranked 9th in all of NCAA Division III in shutout percentage (.64).

Seybolt currently leads the Gators in goals (eight) and points (18) while Reynoso and Alex Lanza (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) lead with four assists a piece.

Sage currently stands in sole possession of first place in the Skyline with Yeshiva tying Mount Saint Mary 1-1 (2 OT).

The Gators will take on Old Westbury for Senior Day on Sat., Oct. 24 at the Plumeri Sports Complex (Saint Rose), Albany, NY. Senior Day celebrations will begin at 12:45 p.m. with kickoff starting at 1:00 p.m.
