Sage wraps Florida trip with a split and goes 4-6 on the first week of 2015

Clermont, FL –The Sage College's softball team wrapped up play in Florida on the final day of the squad's spring training trip. Sage opened the day with a match-up with the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, dropping the game, 7-4. The Gators rebounded with a 5-1 win over Hood College and wrap the week with a 4-6 mark.

GAME #1 Wisconsin-Stevens Point 7-4 Sage

Jordon Schreiner homered and drove in four runs to power UW-Stevens Point (4-3) past Sage (3-6). The senior got the Pointers on the board early with a three-run home run in the bottom of the first.

UWSP added a run in the second on a passed ball but the Gators came back to tie the score at 4-4 in the top of the fourth on a three-run shot by sophomore Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa).

The Pointers came right back with three in the bottom of the fourth. After the first two batters were retired, the next six hitters reached base, four on hits, including a two-run double by Maddie Sawdey (Medford, WI/Medford) and a run-scoring single by Schreiner.

Sydney Gorges (Hortonville, WI/Hortonville) picked up win number three on the season by going five innings before giving way to Breanna Ellison (Pepin, WI/Pepin) for the final two frames. Gorges gave up three earned runs and struck out five.

Sage's Rimawi was 2-2 at the plate with a pair of runs scored and a team-best three RBIs in the game, while rookie Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) was 2-4 with an RBI in the action.

Sophomore pitcher Lindsay Brace (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central) started the game and worked five innings with four strikeouts and allowed six earned runs in the match-up, dropping to 2-4. Rookie Rachael Lashway (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) came in the game in relief and worked one inning with two strikeouts and a walk. 

GAME # 2   Sage 5-1 Hood 

Hood trailed just 2-1 in the seventh, but Sage's senior Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport), Silk and junior Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) hit back-to-back-to-back solo homers to put the game out of reach.

For Hood, Sophia Leaman (Mount Joy, Pa. / Donegal) took the loss, despite a solid outing. The freshman pitched the first 6.2 innings and allowed just six hits and three runs, two earned. She struck out four and did not walk a batter.

Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/ Hoosick Falls Central) threw a complete game for the win and is now 3-4 on the year. She scattered seven hits, walked one and fanned seven.

In addition to her homer, Beikrich stole two bases in the game. Rookie Alana Vanderburg (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) had a pair of doubles to help pace the Sage offense.

The Gators will return to action on March 21 opening Skyline Conference play as they will visit Mt. St. Mary College in a noon doubleheader.
