Sage falls in extra-innings to Oneonta, before dropping action to Transylvania

Clermont, FL –The Sage College's softball team was in action twice on Monday in Florida on their Spring Training Trip. In the first game, Oneonta State came up with a 1-0 win in eight innings over Sage. In the second game, Transylvania beat Sage 9-1 in six innings. Sage drops to 0-4 on the season.

GAME #1

Oneonta State's sophomore pitch Sabrina DeAngelis (East Meadow, NY/Kellenberg Memorial) tossed a one hit gem for the Red and White fanning seven and walking three in eight innings of work.

Sage's senior Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport) lead off with a walk in the top of the first inning and moved to second on a fielders' choice. Junior Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) reached on an error, but Beikirch was thrown out heading to third on the play before the inning ended with Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) striking out.

DeAngelis' settled in early as she struck out four straight batters to end the first and complete the second inning. Dialed in and throwing well, she took a no hitter into the sixth inning before having it broke up on a two out single up the middle.

Oneonta threatened in the top half of the fourth inning after senior catcher Brianna Rivera (Pomona/North Rockland) singled up the middle to lead off the inning. Pinch runner Shelby Cleaveland (Oneonta/Oneonta) moved to third on a pair of groundouts but could not be brought home.

The Gators got a single from sophomore Jessica Adams (Nassau, NY/Columbia) in the sixth inning but were unable to drive her in. With runners reaching third base in both the sixth and seventh inning, The Red Dragons and unable to score, the game went to the eighth in a scoreless tie.

Per tiebreak rules, sophomore Katie O'Gorman (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was placed on second base to start the inning. The outfielder showed smart base running to swipe third base right off the bat before scoring when a routine throw back from the pitcher to catcher went flying behind second place. The run proved to be the game winner.

Oneonta held the Gators hitless in their half of the inning to end the game.

Sophomore pitcher Lindsay Brace (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central) worked the complete game and took the loss as she drops to 0-2. She gave up one unearned run with two strikeouts and three walks off five hits in the eight innings of work.

GAME # 2

Transylvania University posted the 9-1 win over the Gators to improve to 2-2 on the season. The Pioneers put five runs on the board in the bottom of the second inning. Sage answered back with a single run in the top of the third inning as Beikirch drove in a run after sophomore Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) reached on a walk. Rookie Courtney Haff (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) walked before Beikirch had the RBI to drive in Rimawi.

TU put two more runs in the bottom of the fifth and then scored a pair in the bottom of the sixth inning to end the game.

Kovage worked the first two innings, allowing five hits with three earned runs and a walk in taking the loss as she drops to 0-2. Freshman Rachael Lashway (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) worked two innings with no hits and three strikeouts before Brace worked the last 1.2 innings, allowing three earned runs off two hits with one strikeout and three walks.

The Gators will return to action on March 10 facing WPI and Northwestern (MN) at 5 and 7 p.m.
