Softball team splits results on Tuesday with a loss to WPI and a key win over Northwestern Minnesota

Clermont, FL –The Sage College's softball team was in action twice on Tuesday evening in Florida on their Spring Training Trip. In the first game, WPI posted a 13-0 win over the Gators. Sage racked up the key win as they beat Northwestern Minnesota late in the evening, 9-7. Sage is now 1-5 on the season.

GAME #1

WPI (5-1) tallied 10 runs in the first inning of the evening matchup with Sage (0-5). The uprising began with a 2-RBI single by Ashlyn Bedard (Hampstead, NH) and saw Hope Shevchuk (Burlington, CT) double in a run.

WPI added three more in the second with a RiAnna May (Westminster, CO) 2-RBI double and an Ama Biney (Worcester, MA) run-producing single up the middle.

Clare Doolin (Newton, MA), who was named ECAC Division III New England Pitcher of the Week as the game was in progress, allowed one hit, struck out four and walked two in the complete game effort.

DeAngelis' settled in early as she struck out four straight batters to end the first and complete the second inning. Dialed in and throwing well, she took a no hitter into the sixth inning before having it broke up on a two out single up the middle.

For Sage, junior Morgan Dunn (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) collected a singles in the fourth inning for the Gators and broke up the no-hit bid.

Sophomore pitcher Lindsay Brace (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central) started the game and worked one third of an inning, allowing eight earned runs of seven hits with a pair of walks. She suffered the loss and drops to 0-3 on the year. Rookie Rachael Lashway (Queensbury, NY/Glens Falls) came in the game in relief and worked 3.2 innings with two earned runs off three hits with three strikeouts and three walks.

The Gators used a late-game rally to post the win as they tied the game up in the bottom of the fifth inning and took an 8-5 lead heading into the top of the sixth inning. Dunn had an RBI triple to the action as she drove in rookie Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) to start the big inning. Sophomore Jessica Adams (Nassau, NY/Columbia) had an RBI single to drive in Dunn. Rookie Alana Vanderburg (Wynantskill, NY/Columbia) singled and junior Courtney Laughlin (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) had a two RBI triple to give Sage a lead and what would turn out to be the difference for Sage.

Junior pitcher Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) worked into the sixth inning and picked up the win as she yielded nine hits with six runs, inlcuding three earned runs , with three strikeouts and four walks. Now 1-2 on the season, she was relieved by sophomore Lindsay Brace (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central) who picked up the save. Brace worked two innings with one earned run allowed off one hit.

The Gators will return to action on March 12 facing Salve Regina University and Wesleyan University in games at 5 and 7 p.m. on Thursday evening.
