Reyes-Alvarez honored as Gator of the Year in Men's Cross Country

Albany, NY –The Sage College's department of athletics gathered to recognize and honor the outstanding performances of the 2014-2015 year with the naming of the athletic award winners for the 15 varsity athletic teams. In addition to awarding the Gator Award, for the Most Outstanding Player, the department also named the 2014-2015 Female and Male Athletes of the Year as well as the Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year, which is given to the senior student-athlete with the highest overall grade point average.

Sage's men's cross country team captain, Juan Reyes-Alvarez (Latham, NY/Shaker) was named the 2014 Gators of the Year recipient for the third straight year. Among the many honors he earned as a junior with the team, he was also named the 2014 Skyline Conference Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year, marking his second straight citation as the league's Men's Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year honor.

At the 2014 Skyline Conference Cross Country Championships, he became the program's first three-time Skyline Conference First Team All-Star. He posted a time of 29:22.27 to finish in fifth place. On his career, he also finished in fifth as a rookie in 2012 and last year took home third place. The top finisher at every single meet this past fall, Reyes-Alvarez has excelled at Sage.

Head men's cross country coach Jim Bowles said of Reyes-Alvarez, "A quiet leader that led by example, Juan has earned All-Skyline Team honors every year at Sage." Bowles added, he is the current record holder in cross country as well as a member of our outdoor track and field team in the 3,000 meter run. As a senior, we are looking for him to continue his excellent career and finish his time as a Gator on a high note."

He is majoring in business at Sage and is Dean's List student having also earned acclaim as a three-time Sage Scholar-Athlete honoree. Active on campus, he is the president and founder of the Green Club, while also working as a student creative writer for Sage's Athletic Communications office. He is now the only Sage student-athlete honored three times during their career as a Gator of the Year honoree in any sport.

He was also inducted into Sage's Athletic Honor Society for his outstanding accomplishments in the classroom in conjunction with the awards banquet on April 27.
