Houghton, NY- The Sage Colleges' women's tennis team travelled to upstate New York to open their season as the newest member of the Empire 8. Facing Hougton College, the Gators almost pulled off the win, but fell 5-4 in a tight match. Sage falls to 2-1 overall and 0-1 in the Empire 8, while Houghton is now 1-2 overall and 1-2 in the league.
The Gators took third doubles as senior Lindsey Tolman (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) and senior Shanice Mendoza (North Plainfield, NJ/North Plainfield) picked up an 8-4 win.
Down 2-1 heading into the singles play, the Gators got win in singles at No. 1 from sophomore Sammantha Montague (Glenville, NY/Scotia-Glenville) as she had a convincing 6-1, 6-1 win.
Sophomore Rebecca Jackson (Saugerties, NY/John A. Coleman) added a win in three sets at No. 4 singles, while senior Samantha Dibbell (Hunter, NY/Tannersville Central) tallied a win in three sets at No. 6 singles for Sage, but it was not enough as the team suffered its first loss of the year.
Next up for the Gators they will face Alfred University on September 10 at Noon.
