Gators romp past Fighting Tigers in DH Sweep

Troy, NY- The Sage Colleges' softball team hosted the Fighting Tigers of SUNY-Cobleskill at Robison Field in a non-conference doubleheader on Wednesday. The game location was switched due to the poor field conditions from this past week's wet weather. Sage took the first game 5-1 and romped to a 17-3 win in five innings in the second game. With the pair of wins, Sage is now 8-10 overall, riding a seven-game win streak. SUNY-Cobleskill falls to 1-5 on the year.

In the first game, Sage's senior pitcher Allison Ford (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville) tossed a complete game to collect the win as she scattered five with 10 strikeouts. Now 6-4 on the season, she allowed just one earned run in the contest. She added to her outing with a two RBIs and a pair of runs scored in the first game.

Offensively, Sage got a strong effort from graduate performer Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa), as the third baseman added a pair of RBI and was 1 for 3 at the plate.

Cobleskill's rookie pitcher Katerina Weingarten (Carlise, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) suffered the loss after allowing three earned runs off six Gator hits with three strikeouts. She drops 0-2 on the year.

Cobleskill broke up the Sage shutout bid with an RBI from rookie infielder Brianna Becker (Euless, TX/Trinity) in the top of the fifth inning before the Gators stopped a Fighting Tiger threat.

In the nightcap, the two teams exchanged home field status but it did not stop Sage's bats from a 14-hit explosion with 17 runs in the action.

A grand slam by junior Alexa Silk (Freehold, NY/Greenville) in the top of the third inning capped a five run explosion for Sage. By game's end, Silk was 4 for 5 with six RBI, four runs scored and had a pair of stolen bases. Silk is a perfect 14-14 on stolen bases this season, elevating her career resume to include 29 stolen bases, which ranks fourth all-time. Silk has also now tallied 113 career hits with 55 RBI and 13 home runs. She is now tied for 6th all-time with Kellie Jones in home runs, while standing ninth in hits, and seventh in doubles.

Rimawi was 2 for 4 with three RBI and had a pair of doubles in the nightcap, elevating her career resume to include 106 hits with 22 doubles, and 79 RBI. She is tied for 11th in career hits with Megan Welcome, while ranking 8th in career RBI's.

Ford was 3 for 3 at the plate in the night cap with three runs scored, an RBI and a triple. She is now leading the team this season with a pair of triples and owns a .340 average at the plate. Her six career triples is now tied for 11th best at Sage.

Junior Amy Hart (St. Johnsville, NY/Little Falls) pitched the night cap, scattering three earned runs off six hits with 11 strikeouts in five innings of work. She stands at 2-6 this season with a team-best 38 strikeouts this season.

Cobleskill's rookie Brianna Murphy (Yonkers, NY/Yonkers Montessori) took the loss, dropping to 1-1. She worked 2.1 innings with seven earned runs off nine hits.

Sophomore Sarah Munn (Athens, PA/Athens Area) and Weingarten also worked but to no avail as Sage tallied 17 runs, 12 earned off of 14 hits including six extra-base hits.

Sophomore Gabrielle Danthine (Iaonsville, NY/Schoharie) drove in two runs for Cobleskill with her double in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sage is set to travel to SUNY-Old Westbury for a Skyline Conference doubleheader on April 8, while SUNY-Cobleskill returns to action on April 6 for a 3 p.m. NEAC doubleheader at Penn College (Williamsport, PA).
