Juan Reyes-Alvarez Named Cross Country Gator of the Year

Albany, NY – The Sage College’s department of athletics gathered to recognize and honor the outstanding performances of the 2013-2014 year with the naming of the athletic award winners for the 15 varsity athletic teams. In addition to awarding the Gator Award, for the Most Outstanding Player, the department also named the 2013-2014 Female and Male Athletes of the Year as well as the ECAC Merit Medal and the Dean Sharon Robinson Senior Male and Female Scholar-Athletes of the Year. Men’s Cross Country Team member, sophomore Juan Reyes-Alvarez (Latham, NY/Shaker) was named the Gator Award winner in men’s cross country for the second straight year.

Head cross country coach Jim Bowles said of Reyes-Alvarez, “Juan has been an outstanding performer ever since he first stepped on campus.” Bowles continued, “I look forward to working with Juan as he has improved with every meet and is a well-rounded performer that is helping to build a strong foundation for the future here at Sage.”

At the 2013 Skyline Conference Cross Country Championships, Reyes-Alvarez finished in third place overall with his time of 28:33.00. He earned his second consecutive Skyline Conference All-Star First selection for his efforts and becomes the young program's first two-time Skyline Conference All-Star honoree. A year ago, he finished in fifth place at the championship as a rookie. He was named the 2013 Skyline Conference Men’s Cross Country Scholar-Athlete of the Year and was named to the 2013 Sage Scholar-Athlete Team as well as he boasts an impressive 3.467 grade-point average and is majoring in business at Sage.

Also a member of Sage’s inaugural men’s outdoor track and field team, he etched his name into the Gator track record book as he was the first Sage track and field competitor to win an individual event. While competing at the Wesleyan University Swanson Invitational, he won the men’s 5,000 meter run in 17:05.74.
