Sage volleyball team opens new season with a pair of wins at Elms Tourney

 Chicopee, MA – The Sage Colleges' women's volleyball team opened the 2014 campaign on Friday competing at the Elms College Tournament. Sage bested Albertus Magnus College, 3-0 (25-13, 25-7, 29-9) in the opening mach and then beat SUNY-Cobleskill, 3-0 (25-8, 25-19, 25-19). The Gators stand at 2-0 on the young season.

In the first match, the Gators got a double-double from the reining Skyline Conference Women's Volleyball Player of the Year, senior Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville).  She added 14 kills with 16 digs and had a blistering .609 hitting percentage in the action.

Sophomore outside hitter Siena Wilder (Ballston Spa, NY/Burnt Hills Ballston Lake) opened her Sage career with nine kills, nine aces and eight digs. Sophomore setter Rachel Liebig (Hartford, NY/Hartford) connected for 31 setting assists in the action while adding five aces and five digs.  Another rookie, defensive specialist Missy Schneiderman (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) added nine digs with a kill in her collegiate debut.

The Gators combined for a .410 attack percentage in the action against Albertus Magnus.

Against the Fighting Tigers of SUNY-Cobleskill, Liebig handed out 28 assists, while Wilder racked up 6 aces. Another Gator newcomer, senior middle hitter Rachel Martin (Troy, NY/Troy) added eight kills, while Schneiderman and Wilder also tallied 12 digs in the action.

Putriment now has 1,058 career kills (No. 5), while adding 1,345 career digs (No. 4) and is one of just three Sage women's volleyball players with over 1,000 career kills and digs.

Sage will wrap up tournament play on Saturday facing the host Trailblazers of Elms College on Saturday at 1 p.m. in an effort to win the tournament title for the second straight year.

Sage hosts SUNY-Cobleskill on September 9 at 7 p.m. in the Kahl Gym (Albany, NY) in the team's 2014 home opener.
