Gators announce men's soccer award winners

Albany, NY--The Sage Colleges’ department of athletics recently honored members of the varsity teams at the Athletic Awards Banquet.  Sophomore midfielder Evan Southworth (Newburgh, NY/Newburgh Free Academy), a member of the men’s soccer team at Sage was named the recipient of the 2011 Gator of the Year Award as the team Most Valuable Player.         

Over the course of the season, Southworth was named to the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) Second Team All-Metro squad for his play in 2011.  A second-year varsity program, Sage earned bids to the Skyline Conference Tournament as well as the Eastern College Athletic Conference Metro Division III Tournament and finished the season with a record of 11-8-1.

He also connected for a personal-best six goals with two assists for 14 points this season in 20 games played. A 2011 Skyline Conference All-Star First-Team pick as well this past season, he has now played in 36 games with 20 points on eight goals and four assists.

Rookie midfielder Pat Noonan (Hyde Park, NY/F.D. Roosevelt), a member of the men’s soccer team at Sage was named the recipient of the 2011 Sage Men’s Soccer Scholar-Athlete Award for his efforts on and off the soccer field and in the classroom.

Noonan excelled in the classroom in his first year at Sage as a pre-med major and was named to the 2011 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete Team as well as Sage’s Fall Scholar-Athlete Second Team.

He was also tapped as the Skyline Conference Men’s Soccer Rookie of the Week in helping the Gators to the 2011 Skyline Conference semifinals on November 1. In the first match of the league tournament, he tallied a goal and assisted on three others. By year’s end, he had tallied seven points on two goals and three assists, while starting nine of the 14 games he played in as a rookie.   

Rookie midfielder Gustavo Trinidad (Mamaroneck, NY/Mamaroneck), a member of the men’s soccer team at Sage was named the recipient of the 2011 Sage Men’s Soccer Coaches’ Award for his efforts on and off the soccer field.  

He was also tapped as the Skyline Conference Men’s Soccer Player of the Week in helping the Gators to the 2011 Skyline Conference semifinals on November 1. In the first match of the league tournament, he exploded for a hat trick, while adding an assist. By year’s end, he had tallied 23 points on eight goals with seven assists and was the team’s second leading scorer after playing in 18 games. He capped the performance by also earning acclaim from the Eastern College Athletic Conference (ECAC) as the Division III Metro Men’s Player of the Week. 

Sage’s 2011 offense was among the national leaders in several categories.  The Gators ranked 25th in total goals (56), 20th in scoring offense (2.84 gpg), and 38th in total assists (39).
