Gators deliver in Skyline season finale, 2-0

Box Score

Albany, NY---The Sage College men's soccer team hosted the Panthers of Purchase College on Thursday night in a Skyline Conference match held at the Plumeri Sports Complex. The Gators earned a 2-0 win to improve to 10-6-1 overall and 6-3 in the league. Purchase drops to 6-5-2 overall and 3-3-1 in the conference.

The Gators made the most of a defensive error as Purchase fell down 1-0 in the opening minutes of play as they allowed an own goal at 0:32. The Gators then tallied a goal at 10:19 as sophomore defender Nick Mauro (Bristol, CT/Bristol Central) fired the ball in from about 30 yards out for his fourth goal of the season.

The two squads each had chances, but Sage's freshman goalie Trevor Paddy (Brooklyn, NY/Jamaica) collected the win after making some key saves in the contest. He finished the night with six saves and improves to 7-2 in net. Purchase's senior David Kurzwell (Bedford, NY/Fox Lane) made 11 saves in suffering the loss.

Sage had a 13-6 edge on shots on goal in the contest, which was a physical contest. The Gators played most of the play on the offensive end of the field and were in charge most of the match.

Prior to the game, Sage honored senior midfielder Chris Modelowski (Amsterdam, NY/Amsterdam) in inconjunction with Senior Night.

During his two year stint with Sage's men's soccer program, he helped with the launch of men's soccer at Sage and was part of the very first team. Modelowski was part of the 2010 squad that garnered a spot in the Skyline Conference Tournament as a first-year program.

As a junior, he had one goal and one assist. His lone goal on the season was the game-winner as Sage beat Purchase a year ago, 6-0.

As a senior, he has one goal this fall and has played 14 games. He is part of an offensive unit that currently ranks 10th nationally in total goals with 45, while the Gators also rank 29th in Division III in scoring offense with 2.81 goals per game.

He is a physical education major at Sage and was voted the 2010 team's Scholar-Athlete recipient, while also earning a spot on the Dean's List and the 2010-2011 Skyline Conference Scholar-Athlete Team for his accomplishments in the classroom.
