Gators Move to 2-0 in E8 Play with 7-2 Home Victory

ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College increased its winning streak to three with this afternoon's 7-2 home Empire 8 Conference victory vs. Alfred.

Freshman Marian Aguirre (Plano, TX/Plano), who was selected the E8 Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, September 8, continued her strong start to her rookie campaign, winning at number one singles 6-1, 6-0 and teaming with fellow freshman Olivia Monaco (Campbell Hall, NY/Washingtonville) for 8-1 triumph at number two doubles. She is a combined 8-0 across singles and doubles and holds a 48-3 singles ledger.

Emma Nuzzi (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake), a grad student, and junior Tirzah Spivey (Clifton Park, NY/Schenectady) also won in singles and doubles, while freshman Noella Morris (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills) earned a 6-3, 6-0 win at number five singles.

"I'm very happy with our progress through the first part of the season," said Head Coach Michael Branche.  "Our newcomers are bringing great energy and our upperclassmen are showing great leadership. We are excited to keep building on that."

RSC (3-1/2-0 E8) plays next on Wednesday at UMass - Dartmouth at 3:30 PM. 


Gator Bites: The Gators have six newcomers and six returnees on this year's roster…Spivey, a two-time All-Empire 8 Conference singles selection, Nuzzi and senior Emma Vander Baan (Barre, MA/Quabbin Regional) headline the returning players…Spivey finished 5-1 at first singles in league play last season…Aguirre (Plano, TX/Plano) was selected the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, September 8…The rookie started her collegiate career by going 8-0 across singles and doubles, including a 48-3 singles ledger.
