Sage women's track team picks up 8th place; Van Alstyne breaks shot put record again

Houghton, NY— The Sage Colleges' women's outdoor track and field team wrapped action on Saturday afternoon at the 2019 Empire 8 Track and Field Championships on the campus of Houghton College. The two-day event saw Stevens Institute of Technology win both the women's and the men's team titles. Stevens women racked up 189 points just ahead of St. John Fisher College which had 144 points. Sage's women's team added four points and finished in eighth place. 

Sage's junior Skylar Van Alstyne (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) picked up seventh place in the shot put with a throw of 10.91 meters to break her own school record she set last week with a throw of 10.44 meters. She was also 17th in the discus on Saturday with a throw of 23.74 meters.

Freshman Kerry Flower (Schenactady, NY/Schalmont) picked up fifth in the 10,000 meter run with a time of 40:41.41 and was also seventh in the 5,000 meter run in 19:08.63.

Sophomore Sevi Travis (Cohoes, NY/Shaker) who owns the school record in the 800 meter run (2:33.03), just missed her own time after she put up a 2:33.10 and finished in 10th place.

Senior co-captains Victoria Opalka (Fort Johnson, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) and Sagan Leggett (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) picked up a 14th and a 15th place finish, respectively in the 1,500 meter run. Opalka had a time of 5:28.18 and Leggett was right behind her with a time of 5:29.26.

Junior Joanna Tavolaro (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin Perth) picked up eighth in the 100 meter hurdles with a time of 18.19, while rookie Nicole Collazo (New York, NY/Repertory Company HS for the Theatre Arts) was 14th in the 200 meter run in 30.22.

The Gators took sixth in the 4 x 100 relay in 57.00 as Tavolaro, Travis, rookie Shanice Dominick (New York, NY/Automotive) and Collazo ran the race. In the 4 x 400 relay, the Gators were eighth with a time of 4:40.25 as Travis ran the lead off leg, followed by Collazo, Leggett, and Opalka.
