Host Highlanders Use Big Second Half to Take E8 Matinee From RSC

HOUGHTON, N.Y. – Houghton outscored visiting Russell Sage College 44-22 after halftime to take this afternoon's Empire 8 Conference matinee 71-54.

Sophomore guard Layla Acosta (Haines City, FL/Haines City) provided the Gators a double-double of 17 points and 12 rebounds in the setback. Junior guard Olivia Huneau (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) contributed 13 points and four assists, while freshman forward Kallie Hopkins (Millsboro, DE/Poly Tech) added eight points and six boards.

Trailing 32-27 at the break, Houghton (15-1/6-1 E8), now 7-0 at home, turned the tide with a 26-12 third quarter. Junior guard Kayla Camacho, who ranked fourth in the E8 in scoring, led all participants with 23 points on 8-of-17 shooting. She was one of three Highlanders in double figures.

Looking ahead, RSC (4-13/2-6 E8) plays at Saint John Fisher on Friday at 5:30 pm.


Gator Bites: RSC made its second-consecutive appearance in the Empire 8 Conference Championship Tournament Semifinals last season…Nine players returned from the team…They joined four newcomers to make up this year's roster…Head coach Allison Coleman began her tenth season at the helm with an overall record of 136-84…Sophomore guard Layla Acosta (Haines City, FL/Haines City), who started the weekend leading RSC with a 13.3 scoring average, scored 30 points on 45.0 percent shooting in the E8 victory vs. Elmira on January 12...She became the just seventh Gator to score 30 or more points in a game.
