NEW PALTZ, N.Y. – Russell Sage College began its weekend at the SUNY New Paltz Hawk Invitational with a 3-0 setback (25-16, 25-14, 25-23) to the hosts this afternoon.
Junior defensive specialist Macey Salvione (Johnstown, NY/Gloversville) paced the Gators (3-2) with six kills, while sophomore middle hitter Allison Louque (Westminster, MD/Winters Mill), junior defensive specialist Savannah Petersen (Schenectady, NY/Schenectady), and sophomore middle hitter Aniyah Kelley (Newcastle, DE/William Penn) added four kills each.
Defensive specialist Elaina Moisidis (Albany, NY/Albany), a grad student, the reigning Empire 8 Conference Libero/Defensive Player of the Year, led all participants with 19 digs, while sophomore setter Mia Wood (Scotia, NY/Scotia-Glenville) dished out 12 assists.
SUNY New Paltz (4-1), coming off a 21-win season, soared out to a 14-2 lead in the first set and didn't look back to pick up the non-conference home triumph.
Junior right side Jamie Albrecht topped all players with 10 kills on .421 hitting, while senior libero Melanie Podstunka elevated 17 RSC attacks.
The Gators, which entered the weekend as winners of three-straight, have a pair of matches tomorrow at the Hawk Invitational, facing Mount Saint Mary College and Union College.
Notes: The fall marks the debut of Rosilyn Cummings at the helm of the Gators…She took over for Sandy Austein-Collins '87, who retired in March after 26 seasons of collegiate coaching, 13 of which came at RSC…Defensive specialist Elaina Moisidis (Albany, NY/Albany), a grad student, began the campaign sixth in program records with 1,415 career digs...She started the week fifth in school annals with 1,457 career digs…The reigning Empire 8 Conference Libero/Defensive Player of the Year topped the conference in both digs and digs per-set in each of the past two seasons.
