Gators Announce Women's Soccer Award winners for 2011 Season

The Sage Colleges’ department of athletics recently honored members of the varsity teams at the Athletic Awards Banquet.  Senior forward senior Rebecca Marszalek (Adams, MA/Hoosac Valley), a member of the women’s soccer team at Sage was named the recipient of the 2011 Gator of the Year Award as the team Most Valuable Player.

Freshman midfielder Lindsay Millett (Ravena, NY/Ravena Coeymans-Selkirk), a member of the women’s soccer team at Sage was named the recipient of the 2011 Rookie of the Year for her efforts on the soccer field.

Head coach Caitlin Colfer said of Marszalek, "Rebecca was an outstanding forward, whose strength and determination led her to be the leading goal scorer in Sage Soccer History.” Colfer continued, “I know that she will be successful in her future career and wish her all the best. We hope to have her support in the future as an alumna for the women's soccer program."

She capped her stellar career this year after excelling on the pitch at Sage. She was named to the 2011 Skyline Conference Women’s Soccer All-Star First Team. The selection to the first team was the third of her career as she was named to the first team in both 2009 and 2010 previously.

In late October, she was named the Skyline Conference and the Eastern College Athletic Conference Women’s Soccer Player of Week to close out the month of October. She finished the 2011 season as the Gators’ leading scorer with nine goals and two assists for 20 points with three game-winning goals on the season. She caps her stellar career as Sage’s all-time career point leader and goal scorer. She tallied 52 career goals with 11 assists and 115 points. In addition, she added 16 career game-winning goals.

She started 65 games at Sage, which is fourth best, while her 66 games played is seventh highest amongst all Gator women’s soccer performers. She helped the team to Skyline Conference tournament appearances every season during her career, while finishing as the team’s top scorer all four seasons as well.

As a sophomore, she was also tapped for the 2009 Eastern College Athletic Conference All-Star Women’s Soccer Second Team after helping the team to an ECAC Upstate Tournament appearance as well.

Colfer said of Millett, "Lindsay's desire to work hard and compete throughout the 2011 season earned her our rookie of the year award.” Colfer added, “I am excited to work with her this year and know that she has a bright future with the Sage Women's Soccer Program."

In her first season at Sage, she added four goals on the fall with one game-winner and nine total points. She played in all 14 games for the Gators and was a key component as the team earned the program’s fifth straight berth to the Skyline Conference Women’s Soccer Tournament at year’s end.
