Women's tennis falls 5-4 to Spartans

Castleton, VT – The Sage College's women's tennis team travelled to Castleton State College on Wednesday afternoon for a non-conference match with the Spartans. Castleton collected the 5-4 win to improve to 4-1, while Sage falls to 1-4.

For the Gators, Sage's senior co-captains Kirsten Ackerman (Guilderland, NY/Guilderland) was a winner at No. 1 singles, besting CSC's senior Meghan Susslin, 6-0, 6-0. Sophomore Erin Duffy (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) was a winner at No. 2 singles as she topped Olga McIntyre, 4-6, 6-2, 6-1. Rounding out Sage's singles winners on Wednesday was senior Katie Schultz (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park) as she pulled off a 3-6, 6-0, 7-5 win over Sara Novenstern.

Ackerman and Schultz are a perfect 5-0 in singles play this fall, while Ackerman has upped her career singles' mark to 35-3. She teamed at No. 1 doubles today with Duffy and they beat Susslin and Shannon Hagerty, 8-4. Ackerman now boasts a combined career record of 63-11.

Sage returns to action on September 14 travelling to face Yeshiva in the team's 2014 Skyline Conference opener. The match will take place at 4 p.m. at Binghamton Racquet Club in Edgewater, NJ.
