Albany, NY – The Sage Colleges' men's soccer team hosted the Rams of Farmingdale State College on Wednesday afternoon in the semifinals of the 2013 Skyline Conference Men's Soccer Tournament. For the second time in 11 days the two teams played to a scoreless overtime tie after playing to a 0-0 tie in the regular-season meeting at FSC on October 26. Seeded No. 5, the Rams advanced 1-0 after beating top seeded Sage on penalty kicks (6-5) and will play on Saturday, November 9 in the Skyline Conference Championship in conjunction with the Skyline Fall Festival at Mt. St. Mary College at 3:30 p.m.
In the first half, Sage held a 6-1 shots advantage as senior goalie Angelo Viteritti (Huntington, NY/John Glenn) made two saves to keep the action scoreless. The second half saw Sage hold a 3-2 edge in the shots with the Rams making five corner kicks in the end of regulation.
In the overtime, Sage held a 5-1 advantage on shots Sage's sophomore goalkeeper TJ Zehner (Beacon, NY/Beacon) did not make a save.
After 110 minutes of scoreless play, the game was decided in penalty kicks to advance one team to the championship match. The score was knotted at 3-3 after the first five kickers went for each team and in the sudden victory stage of penalty kicks, Alexis Escobar (Hicksville, NY/Monsignor McClancy) scored for the Rams to put them up 4-3. Sage's freshman Alex Lanza (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) converted his shot to tie the action at 4-4. FSC's sophomore Diego Sarmiento (Lindenhurst, NY/Lindenhurst) scored to give his team a 5-4 lead. Sophomore Sean Lanza (Poughkeepsie, NY/Spackenkill) made his shot to tie the action at 5-5. Sophomore midfielder Victor Romero (Bay Shore, NY/Bay Shore) pushed his shot past Sage's keeper for the score and gave his team the needed advantage into the sudden death round as freshman Kyle LeClerc (Beacon, NY/Beacon) had his shot saved to end the action and put the Rams into the finals.
Zehner made one save for Sage, while Viteritti made nine saves for Farmingdale State.
