Troy, NY – The Sage College's women's tennis team hosted the Gryphons of Sarah Lawrence College on Saturday at Prospect Park in a Skyline Conference match. The Gators posted a thrilling 5-4 win to tally a key conference win and keep their post-season hopes alive. Sage is now 6-6 overall and 2-2 in the league, while SLC drops to 6-5 overall and 1-3 in the league. For the Gators, Saturday's win represents the team's fifth in the last six matches played.
Playing at No. 1 singles for the first time this season, sophomore Erin Duffy (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) added a 6-0, 6-0 win as she beat SLC's senior Kayla Pincus. Senior Katie Schultz (Wynantskill, NY/Averill Park), this week's Skyline Conference Women's Tennis Player of the Week, was victorious at No. 2 singles as she beat Autumn Atkinson, 7-5, 6-4 for the decisive team point to lead the Gators to the win after a marathon match lasting almost two hours.
At No. 3 singles, senior co-captain Lauren Bendall (Rome, NY/Rome Free Academy) collected the win, 7-6 (7-2), 6-1 to beat the Gryphon's Sofia Rey and help key the Gators on Senior Day.
The Gators were led at No. 1 doubles by Duffy and Schultz as they beat Pincus and Reh, 8-6.
Sage returns to action on October 14 hosting the Skyline Conference's defending champions, Farmingdale State College at 3:30 p.m. at Prospect Park. SLC is back in action tomorrow facing St. Joseph's College (LI) in a match that was suspended on Friday night.
