Kovage provides support on both sides of the plate to lift Sage past MSMC; Game two suspended

Troy, NY – The Sage Colleges' softball team hosted the Knights of Mt. St. Mary College in a Skyline Conference doubleheader on Wednesday afternoon. Sage posted a 9-8 win in the first game of the scheduled pair of contests, while the second game was tied at 4-4 through five innings and was suspended due to darkness. The game will be continued on Tuesday, April 22 at 5 p.m.

Sage stands at 17-10 overall and 6-3 in the Skyline, while MSMC is now 20-11 overall and 10-3 in the league.

MSMC trailed 5-2 after three innings of play, but battled back and took a 7-5 lead through six innings. MSMC tacked three runs in the top of the seventh to take an 8-7 lead. In the bottom of the seventh, Sage's freshman infielder Kelsey Wood (North Dighton, MA/Dighton-Rehoboth) walked and with one out, junior Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport) singled to center field. Junior Meghan Roullier (Wyantskill, NY/Columbia) walked and with bases loaded, senior Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) drew a bases loaded walk to tie the game. Sophomore pitcher Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) had an RBI single to left center to drive in the winning run and give Sage a key conference victory.

For the game, Kovage worked a complete game and tallied the win after striking out three and scattering seven hits. She improves to 9-6 after also going 4-5 at the plate with two RBI's and the game-winning hit.

Beikirch was 4-5 with three runs scored and a double to go with her RBI.  Faas was 3-4 with three RBIs to help the Gators tally 15 hits in the action.

MSMC's got back to back solo home runs in the top of the first inning with two outs as junior Danielle Soto (Miller Place, NY/Miller Place) went deep and the next batter  junior catcher Stephanie Karcher (Oxford, CT/Oxford) also went deep.

In the second inning, senior Ashley Peel (Shelton, CT/St. Joseph) connected for a three run home run. By game's end, Soto was 2-4 with two RBIs, while Karcher was 2-3 with two RBI's to go with her double and her home run.

Sophomore Victoria Goldbach (Middle Village, NY/Archbishop Molloy) started and worked 5.2 innings with five strikeouts and six earned runs off 13 hits. Sophomore Nicole Lomangino (Wantagh, NY/Saint Francis Prep) worked two thirds of an inning and suffered the loss with her three walks and two earned runs off two hits. She drops to 6-2.

Sage is back in action on Friday, April 18 hosting SUNY-Old Westbury in a Skyline Conference pair of games. First pitch is set for 3:00 p.m. at Robison Field.
