Gators split results on day one of 2014 season in Florida

SAGE SOFTBALL TEAM OPENS SEASON WITH A SPLIT IN FLORIDA

 

Clermont, FL – The Sage Colleges' softball team opened the 2014 season on Sunday afternoon at the National Training Center. Sage opened with a 6-2 win over Becker College, but fell in the nightcap, 10-1 in five innings to Simmons College. The Gators are now 1-1 on the young season.

Against Becker, Sage senior short stop Hillary Faas (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia) had a double and two RBI's after going 2-4 at the plate.  Rookie Jessica Adams (Nassau, NY/Columbia) also added a double and an RBI to pace the Gators to the season-opening win after they combined for seven hits and no defensive errors in the team's first game. Junior Samantha Woitkoski (Troy, NY/Lansingburgh) added an RBI and was 2-4 in the game.

For the Gators, sophomore pitcher Katie Kovage (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) collected the win as she worked 6.1 innings. She gave up four hits with no runs allowed and fanned eight batters on the day. Freshman Lindsay Brace (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central) worked 1/3 of an inning and gave up two earned runs with four walks and a strikeout.

Against Simmons, Faas had the Gators' lone hit and RBI as she drove in junior Kristen Beikirch (Brockport, NY/Brockport), who reached on a walk.  Simmons combined for 10 runs off seven hits in collecting the win.

For Sage, freshman Erika Daigle (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) worked four innings and took the loss after allowing five hits with three earned runs and four strikeouts, while walking five. Brace worked the final inning for Sage, yielding four earned runs with off two hits with four walks and one strikeout.
