Old Westbury tops Sage in Skyline Conference opener, 65-43

Old Westbury, NY--- The Sage Colleges' women's basketball team traveled to SUNY-Old Westbury for its Skyline Conference opener. The host Panthers tallied a 65-54 win to improve to 2-3 overall and 1-0 in the conference. The Gators fall to 1-5 overall and 0-1 in the league.

The Panthers led 26-20 at the break and the Gators made a late-game run but could not pull off the win on Saturday afternoon.

Sophomore forward Chelsea Martin (Davenport, NY/Jefferson Central) led the way for Sage with her 11 points and added seven rebounds. Rookie Amie Jefferson (Albany, NY/Colonie Central) netted a career-best nine rebounds in the contest with four blocks, also a career-high.

Sage's junior forward Kara Hackett (Peru, NY/Peru Central) also turned in a strong performance off the bench with eight points. Classmate Laurel Jicha (Hannibal, NY/Hannibal) also finished with a Sage personal-best nine points in the action after connecting on four-five shots from the floor.

Old Westbury's Denise Zajonc had 15 points in the game, while Deandra Scott had 11 points. On the boards, the Panthers got 15 rebounds from Mayjha Elston as she had nine defensive caroms.

The Gators will return to action on December 4 at noon facing the COllege of Staten Island in a non-conference game.
