Slow Start Dooms Gators Against WNEU

ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College, playing at home for the first time in two weeks, was unable to overcome a slow start in this afternoon's 16-9 non-conference loss to Western New England.

The visiting Golden Bears held a 6-1 lead after the opening quarter, before the Gators climbed back into the Tuesday matinee with a 6-2 second period.  Up 8-7 at the break, WNEU (2-7) netted the first six goals of the second half to secure the road victory.

Senior attacker Grace Hines (Schenectady, NY/Guilderland) registered three goals and an assist to pace the RSC offense.

Senior attacker Alexandra Queeney (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) added two goals, an assist, and five draw controls, while senior midfielder Ashley Hearn (Waterloo, NY/Waterloo) tallied four caused turnovers, five draw controls, and three groundballs.

Junior attacker Mia Celentano topped the Golden Bears with six goals and three assists. Senior midfielder Emmy Burns contributed five goals and an assist, while senior Riley Franzo turned aside 14 RSC shots to get the win (2-0).

Looking ahead, RSC (4-5) is slated to host Thomas on Saturday morning at 10:00 am.


Gator Bites: The spring marks the first with Matt Johnson at the helm of the Gators…He got his first win on his RSC ledger on March 5 at SUNY Poly…Ten players, including eight starters, return this season…Hines began the season ranked second in school records in both points and goals…She became just the second Gator to score 100 career goals vs. Marywood on March 3…Hines was announced as the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week honors the next day for her seven goal, one assist performance...Queeney was selected the E8 Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 10…She achieved a pair of milestones while helping the Gators go 2-0…Queeney became just the fourth RSC player to surpass 100 career points in Tuesday's win at SUNY Poly and set the program record for career draw controls in Saturday's victory vs. Castleton…The senior totaled five goals, six assists, 14 draw controls, four groundballs, and three caused turnovers across the pair of triumphs…Queeney surpassed 200 career draw controls on March 30 at Nazareth.
