ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College Women's Basketball sophomore guard Layla Acosta (Haines City, FL/Haines City) was voted third-team All-Empire 8 Conference. Voting results, conducted by the league's head coaches, were announced by the E8 office earlier today.
Opponents had to account for Acosta all season. She ranked fifth in the E8 with a team-best 14.5 scoring average and topped the Conference by making 33.9 percent of her three-point attempts. Acosta, knocked down 2.3 three-pointers per-game, good for second on the circuit, while was fifth in the E8 with a 77.1 free throw percentage.
The sophomore guard, who averaged 15.0 points during Conference games, fourth-best in the E8, contributed double figures 22 times and recorded three 20+ point efforts. She scored 30 points on 45.0 percent shooting in the January E8 victory vs. Elmira, becoming the just seventh Gator to score 30 or more points in a game.
Acosta, who recorded three double-doubles, averaged 5.7 rebounds, 1.1 assists, and 1.0 steals for RSC.
One member of each team was named that institution's representative on the 2023-24 E8 Women's Basketball Sportswomen of the Year Team. The Empire 8 Conference emphasizes that "Competing with Honor and Integrity" is an essential component of a student-athlete's experience in conjunction with an institution's educational mission. These honorees have distinguished themselves and consistently exhibit the critical traits as outstanding sportswomen. Junior guard Gwen Eichen (Moriah, NY/Moriah Central) represented the Gators (6-19/4-12 E8) on the squad.
