Late-game heroics by Martillotta lifts men's soccer past Westfield State, 3-2

Westfield, MA – Russell Sage College men's soccer team was on the road on Tuesday evening facing the Owls of Westfield State University in a non-conference match. Rookie forward Peter Martillotta (Gasport, NY/Royalton Hartland) propelled the Gators to the 3-2 road win with his second game-winning goal this year to break a 2-2 tie.  RSC improves to 2-0-1, while the Owls drop to 1-1.

RSC jumped out to a 2-0 halftime lead after senior forward El Hadji Iba Sy (Bronx, NY/Emma Lazarus) tallied the first goal on the match on a pass from junior defender Mason Kievet (LaGrange, NY/Our Lady of Lourdes) at 8:55. Graduate player John Locicero (Gardiner, NY/Wallkill) gave the squad a 2-0 lead on an assist from junior Joe Piperata (Rensselaer, NY/Catholic Central) at 35:41.

RSC's halftime lead was cut in half as Paul Whalley scored at 52:46 on a feed from Ethan Margolis at 52:46. The Gators had an opportunity to jump out 3-1 as Iba Sy was awarded a penalty kick at 61:16 but the shot was high over the cross bar. Westfield's Charlie Anischik tied the action at 2-2 at 75:10.

Martillotta provided the game-winner with just 3:03 left in regulation to break the 2-2 tie as he converted the feed from sophomore Andrew Kraszewski (Mechanicville, NY/Mechanicville). HHe now has a pair of goals, both of which are game-winners on his young RSC career.

Sage senior keeper Tyler Brennan (Albany, NY/Shaker) made the start with four saves and a pair of goals allowed in his 75:36 minutes of service. Junior Jordan Prouty (Cohoes, NY/Cohoes) earned the win with a pair of saves in relief and is now 1-0.

The Gators are back in action on September 8 travelling to SUNY-Canton for a 6 p.m. non-league match-up.
