Five Gators Score as They Roll Past Utica on Senior Day

ALBANY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College men's lacrosse used a 7-2 first quarter and 10-5 halftime advantage to propel past Utica on "Senior Day" Saturday afternoon 16-7. The Gators defense held the Pioneers to two goals in the second half.

Attacker Nate Kettle (Killbuck, NY/Salamanca) backed his seniors with a historic day. The sophomore scored his 100th career point, as well as setting single-season program standards in both goals and points. The reigning Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week, who was also named to the USILA Team of the Week, scored six goals and assisted his teammates two times in the victory. 

Senior midfielder Anthony Marrone (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township) found the back of the net three times while senior attacker Ryan Hanna (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive) scored twice. Senior defender Hunter Riley (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa), senior midfielder Akili Richardson (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglass Academy), and senior attacker Zach Cahill (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central) all scooped up a pair of ground balls. 

Junior attacker Kollin Matthews (Marcy, NY/Whitesboro) scored at least two goals for the third straight game, racking up a season-high on Saturday with three. Sophomore attacker Mame Diba (New York, NY/Haldane) scored two goals and registered two assists in the victory. 

Sophomore midfielder Gamo Koulibaly (Aurora, CO/Rangeview) scooped up a game-high nine ground balls, while junior defender Joe Johnson (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) caused a game-best six turnovers. 

Utica (4-9/0-4 E8), still searching for their first conference victory of the season, had seven different scorers in the loss. 

RSC (5-8/2-2 E8), which defeated Utica for the first time in program history, plays next on Saturday at Saint John Fisher.


Senior Day: Before the game, Russell Sage College Athletics recognized the following players: senior attacker Ryan Hanna (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive), junior midfielder Dean Sampson (Staten Island, NY/Tottenville), senior midfielder Zach Cahill (Hoosick Falls, NY/Hoosick Falls Central), senior midfielder Mathieu Durkin (Plattsburgh, NY/Plattsburgh), senior midfielder Jake McElwee (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty), senior defender Hunter Riley (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa), junior midfielder Akili Richardson (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglass Academy), and senior midfielder Anthony Marrone (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township) for their contributions to the men's lacrosse program.


Gator Bites: The Gators returned 24 players to this year’s edition…Attacker Bailey Martin (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga Central), a graduate student, and Kettle headline the group…Martin began the spring as the program career in points (139), goals (91), and assists (48)…Kettle, voted a co-captain as a sophomore, capped his rookie campaign with a second-team All-Empire 8 Conference honor…He was selected for the April 9 USILA Team of the Week and named the E8 Player of the Week for the periods ending March 17 and April 7…The sophomore, who surpassed 100 career points on April 13 vs. Utica, began the week leading the Conference in points (54), goals (33), and assists (21)…He is closing in on the program's single season records for points (58 - Hunter Brunelle, 2022) and goals (36 – Bailey Martin, 2022)...Junior defender Drew Rankin (Painted Post, NY/Corning Painted Post), RichardsonKettle,and  McElwee were voted co-captains.
