ALFRED, N.Y. – Host Alfred outscored Russell Sage College 11-1 during the second and third quarters to come away with this afternoon's 18-6 Empire 8 Conference victory.
Midfielder Shea Obado (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood), a graduate student, fired a pair into the net for the Gators, while senior midfielder Jake McElwee (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) added a goal and two assists.
The goalkeeping duo of sophomore Andrew Collora (West Babylon, NY/West Babylon), and Collin Dougherty (East Greenbush, NY/Columbia), a graduate student, combined to stop 16 shots in the Saturday matinee.
RSC got off to a good start, holding a 5-3 advantage after the opening period. The Saxons (7-2/1-0), now winners of three-in-a-row, gained control with a 7-1 second quarter. The Gators were within striking distance at the half, but Alfred increased its distance with four third-period goals, one of which was man-down.
Attacker Owen Zimmerman, a grad student, paced the victors with five goals and two assists.
RSC (2-8/0-2 E8) plays next on Tuesday at Castleton.
Gator Bites: The Gators returned 24 players to this year's edition…Attacker Bailey Martin (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga Central), a graduate student, and sophomore attacker Nate Kettle (Killbuck, NY/Salamanca) headline the group…Martin began the spring as the program career in points (139), goals (91), and assists (48)…Kettle, voted a co-captain as a sophomore, capped his rookie campaign with a second-team All-Empire 8 Conference honor…Junior defender Drew Rankin (Painted Post, NY/Corning Painted Post), junior midfielder Akili Richardson (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglass Academy), Kettle, and McElwee were voted co-captains…Kettle was named the E8 Player of the Week for the period ending March 17…He tallied 11 points on seven goals and four assists in the 2-0 week.
