Gators Hold Off Eastern Connecticut

ALBANY, N.Y. –  Russell Sage College broke a 13-13 fourth quarter deadlock with three goals in a 2:13 span to defeat visiting Eastern Connecticut State 16-14 on Tuesday night.

Seven different Gators scored in the non-conference victory.

Senior midfielder Anthony Marrone (Monroe, NJ/Monroe Township) led the way with five goals and an assist. Sophomore attacker Nate Kettle (Killbuck, NY/Salamanca) added four goals and an assist, while midfielder Shea Obado (Spotswood, NJ/Spotswood), a graduate student, tallied a hat trick.

Senior midfielder Ryan Hanna (Flanders, NJ/Mt. Olive) and sophomore attacker Mame Diba (New York, NY/Haldane) each contributed a goal and three helpers, while junior defender Joe Johnson (Gansevoort, NY/South Glens Falls) caused three turnovers and scooped nine groundballs.

Trailing 4-1 midway through the first period, RSC, which out-shot the Warriors 54-30 on the night, used a 7-2 run to hold a 9-7 lead at the intermission. The Gators netted the first goal strikes of the third period before ECSU clawed its way back into the game with a 6-2 jaunt.

A pair of goals by Marrone sandwiched a Kettle marker during the deciding run.

Senior midfielder Zacharie Appolon, one of four Eastern Connecticut players to record four points tonight, broke the RSC momentum with a goal with 2:04 left.  ECSU (2-4) won the ensuing face-off, but the Gators forced a pair of turnovers to secure the home triumph.

RSC (1-6) hosts Saint Joseph's University - Long Island on Saturday at 1:00 pm.


Gator Bites: The Gators returned 24 players to this year’s edition… Attacker Bailey Martin (Syracuse, NY/Onondaga Central), a graduate student, and sophomore attacker Nate Kettle (Killbuck, NY/Salamanca) headline the group…Martin began the spring as the program career in points (139), goals (91), and assists (48)…Kettle, voted a co-captain as a sophomore, capped his rookie campaign with a second-team All-Empire 8 Conference honor…Junior defender Drew Rankin (Painted Post, NY/Corning Painted Post), junior midfielder Akili Richardson (Bronx, NY/Frederick Douglass Academy), Kettle, and senior midfielder Jake McElwee (Jackson, NJ/Jackson Liberty) were voted co-captains.
