TROY, N.Y. – Russell Sage College equaled a season-high by scoring 12 goals in this afternoon's Empire 8 Conference shutout of visiting Elmira.
The Gators (5-8/2-4 E8), which were up 3-0 just 3:17 in, held a 6-0 lead after the opening quarter and 10-0 at the break.
Graduate students forward Alyssa Fitzgerald (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury), and midfielder Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, NY/Whitney Point), the leading scorer in the E8, helped RSC tally the second-most goals in a game in program history. The duo tied a program single-game standard with four goals each.
Freshman midfielder Cheyanne Zobel (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) registered a program-single game record four assists, while sophomore goalkeeper Jaia Caron (Bellows Falls, VT/Bellows Falls Union) (Win, 5-8) and freshman goalkeeper Mercedez Cecelia-Storey (Pine Hill, NY/Onteora) combined for three saves. The rookie now has the RSC single-season record for assists and closed the week ranked third in the E8 in the category.
RSC out-shot Elmira (2-8/0-5 E8) 34-6, including 12-1 in the first half, of the shutout victory.
The Gators close the regular season on Saturday at Nazareth. Start time is set for 1:00 pm.
"Senior Day": Prior to the E8 matinee, Russell Sage College Athletics recognized Midfielder Alexa Wentz (Whitney Point, NY/ Whitney Point) and defender Kyerra Stanley (Theresa, NY/Indian River), both graduate students, for their contributions to the field hockey program.
Notes: Forward Sara O'Connor (Rexford, NY/Niskayuna), a grad student, is the program record holder for career points with 81 on 33 goals and 15 assists...She holds program records for most points in a season with 42 in 2019…O'Connor scored four goals in the 12-0 win at Wells on September 28, now tied with Fitzgerald and Stevens for the most by a Gator in a single game.…The trio are three of the program's top-four career scoring leaders…Stevens tops the E8 in scoring with 39 points on 16 goals and seven assists...She closed the day just three points and one goal away from tying the RSC single-season records...Fitzgerald sat tied for fifth with 26 points, while O'Connor ranked seventh with 25 points…Zobel now has the RSC single-season standard for assists…Her 10 assists puts her third in the E8...Caron was selected the Empire 8 Conference Defensive Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, October 8…She concluded the week with three shutouts, a program single-season record, and seven double-digit save performances.
