PITTSFORD, N.Y. – Russell Sage College erased an early 2-0 deficit to tie its Empire 8 Conference opener at Saint John Fisher at 2-2 before falling 3-2 this afternoon.

The host Cardinals, which won the E8 Tournament Championship twice in the past three seasons, got started quickly in the Saturday matinee, scoring twice in the opening 7:30.

RSC battled back, using goals by freshman midfielder Cheyanne Zobel (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) and midfielder Amy Stevens (Castle Creek, NY/Whitney Point), a grad student,to knot the contest at 2 with 25:08 remaining.

A late third quarter tally by senior midfielder Sam Choate, her second of the day, put SJFU ahead.

The Gators earned some quality chances to re-tie things late, taking five shots and securing three corners during the final 3:51.

Sophomore goalkeeper Jaia Caron (Bellows Falls, VT/Bellows Falls Union) (Loss, 2-4) stopped 12 Cardinal shots, while senior goalkeeper Sophia Trozzi registered 13 saves for SJFU (2-5/1-0 E8).

The Gators (2-4/0-1 E8) are back in action on Thursday at Wells. The non-conference game is slated to begin at 6:00 PM.
