RSC Baseball Falls in High-Scoring Tuesday Affair

SCHENECTADY, N.Y. - Russell Sage College Baseball lost 18-11 in a Tuesday afternoon non-conference game against Union College. 

The Gators (9-9/4-1 E8) offense picked up where they left off after the 65-run weekend sweep of Alfred, bolting out to a 6-2 lead after two innings. RSC scored nine or more runs for the sixth time in their last seven contests. 

Outfielder James Lubanski (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber), a grad student, and junior infielder Zachary Figueras (Apopka, FL/Windermere) each contributed multi-hit games. Lubanski went 3-6 with two RBIs, while Figueras hit a double and a triple and scored a run.

Juniors Evan Grimes (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa)Jorge Oropeza (Rochester, NY/Greece Athena High School), and Cole Paro (Wolfeboro NH/Kingswood Regional) all drove in two runs in the Gators eleven-run effort.

Union College (12-4) scored 15 runs in their final four trips to the plate including a seven run 8th to secure the non-conference victory.

Sam Strazza registered a game-high four hits and drove in three runs and Ryan Cowles and Caleb Miller each blasted two-run homers to propel the Garnet Chargers' offense.

Kyle Patlove recorded the victory for Union, striking out one in his inning of relief. 

RSC is scheduled to return to the diamond this Saturday for a non-conference doubleheader at SUNY Poly. 


Gator Bites: Now its third season as a program, RSC looks to continue to climb the Empire 8 Conference ladder in 2024…The Gators, which returned all 10 starters, were the runner-up in the 2023 E8 Championship Tournament…Outfielder James Lubanski (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber), a grad student, and junior pitcher Liam Doyle (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot) headline the returnees…Lubanski was named third-team All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association, while Doyle, a righty, topped RSC in innings pitched and ERA last spring…Junior outfielder Brendan Espinal (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was selected the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 10…He slashed .559/.941/.595 during the team's Florida trip…Espinal totaled 12 runs scored, 10 RBI, 32 bases, and six doubles across the nine games.
