Gators Score 31 as They Roll Past Alfred

CORTLAND, N.Y. – Russell Sage College baseball used a 31-3 mercy-rule victory to complete the sweep of its three-game weekend series against Alfred on Sunday afternoon.

The Gators (9-8/4-1 E8) combined 14 hits with 18 free passes on Sunday to complete a 65-run Easter weekend series.

Junior infielder Dom Caminitti (Mahopac, NY/Mahopac) fronted the RSC offense driving in four runs and scoring three of his own. 

Junior outfielder Brendan Espinal (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) continued to shine in the young campaign with a two hit, three run, and three RBI performance. 

Junior infielder Jeff Stearnes (Vergennes, VT/Vergennes Union) and outfielder James Lubanski (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber), a grad student, each tallied two hits. Stearnes drove in three runs while Lubanski brought home two. 

Junior outfielder Evan Grimes (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) contributed a 2-2 performance off the bench, including a 6th inning RBI-triple.

Joe Degroot (Clay, NY/Cicero-North Syracuse), a grad student, got the nod on the mound, throwing a strong four innings only giving up three hits and striking out four. The win his third pitching victory of the season. 

Alfred (1-11/0-6 E8) had five players with a hit, including doubles from Benjamin Weimer and Cameron Brought. 

RSC is slated to play next on Tuesday afternoon at Union.


Gator Bites: Now its third season as a program, RSC looks to continue to climb the Empire 8 Conference ladder in 2024…The Gators, which returned all 10 starters, were the runner-up in the 2023 E8 Championship Tournament…Outfielder James Lubanski (Port Washington, NY/Paul D. Schreiber), a grad student, and junior pitcher Liam Doyle (West Sayville, NY/Connetquot) headline the returnees…Lubanski was named third-team All-Region by the American Baseball Coaches Association, while Doyle, a righty, topped RSC in innings pitched and ERA last spring…Junior outfielder Brendan Espinal (Clifton Park, NY/Shenendehowa) was selected the Empire 8 Conference Player of the Week for the period ending Sunday, March 10…He slashed .559/.941/.595 during the team's Florida trip…Espinal totaled 12 runs scored, 10 RBI, 32 bases, and six doubles across the nine games.
