Gators Drop E8 Opener to Houghton

ALBANY, N.Y. –  Russell Sage College opened Empire 8 Conference play by falling 3-0 to visiting Houghton tonight at the Kahl Campus Center.

Junior right side Caitlin Hammecker (Warnerville, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) topped the Gators with seven kills, while middle hitter Celia Gagnon (Troy, NY/Ichabod Crane), a graduate student, finished off six rallies. Senior defensive specialist Elaina Moisidis (Albany, NY/Albany), who surpassed 1,000 career digs earlier this month, elevated 10 Highlander attacks, while junior setter Statia Walker (Schodack, NY/Maple Hill), registered 17 assists and eight digs. 

Houghton (3-8/1-0 E8), which snapped a five-game losing streak, received 11 kills on .714 hitting from freshman middle hitter Emma Cole.  Setter Haley Unverdorben, a graduate student, recorded a double-double of 28 assists and 11 digs in the sweep.

Looking ahead, RSC (3-12/0-1 E8) hosts Medaille tomorrow at 2:00 pm


Notes: Head coach Sandy Augstein-Collins, picked up her 375th career victory on September 14 vs. SUNY Cobleskill…She began her 13th season coaching at RSC and 26th overall, with 373 career wins…Seven players, including Walker, Moisidis, and Gagnon, returned to the program…Moisidis, who topped the Empire 8 Conference with 492 digs, 4.82 per-set, last fall, became the 15th RSC player to surpass 1,000 career digs earlier this month.
