Gators open action on Day one of Sage Fall Festival

Albany, NY- The Sage Colleges' women's volleyball team opened play on Friday night hosting the two-day Sage Fall Festival. The College of Mt. St. Vincent earned a 3-2 win over Sage in the first match of the night, and then dropped a tough 3-1 decision to Skidmore in the last match of the night.

The Dolphins took the first set 25-18 and the Gators took the second set 25-20 and the third set 25-20, before CMSV took the fourth set, 25-21 and the decisive set, 15-12.

Against CMSV, sophomore middle hitter Miranda Nethaway (Fonda, NY/Fonda Fultonville) tallied 10 kills with eight total blocks with 14.5 points, while rookie outside hitter Gabby Rowell (Morrisonville, NY/Beekmantown) added a team-best 12 kills with a .226 attack percentage. She also added seven digs with 12.0 points, while sophomore outside hitter Jessica Carrozzi (Warnerville, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) picked up 12.5 points after adding nine kills (.240 attack percentage) with for digs and six total blocks.

Senior captain Alyssa Nellis (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) picked up five kills with three aces, 22 setting assists with nine digs and four total blocks. Classmate Missy Schneiderman (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) led the team with her 16.  Junior setter Brittany Orminski (Galway, NY/Galway) racked up 11 digs with two aces for the Gators.

Against Skidmore (4-5), the Thoroughbreds were victorious taking set one (25-21), while Sage picked up the tie after taking set two (27-25). Skidmore took the third and fourth sets, 25-14, 25-13, respectively.

Nethway led Sage with her 11 kills while Nellis and Carrozzi both added six kills each. Nellis added 11 digs with three block assists and 21 setting assists, while Carrozzi connected for five digs in the match Orminski had 13 digs with three kills and an ace, while freshman setter Brooke Monty (Copake, NY/Taconic Hills) added seven digs with 11 setting assists.

Schneiderman now has 1,163 career digs after the match with CMSV and vaulted from 11th place to 8th place. Her 113 career aces is 18th best at Sage. Nellis has added 154 career total blocks and is ninth place on the Gator career list, while making her way to the Top 20 in career kills as she now has 385.

Sage is back in action on Saturday, September 16 with the Sage Fall Festival. Sage will face Mt. Ida College at 11 a.m. and Rutgers University-Newark at 3 p.m. to wrap play in the event.
