Sage volleyball faces tough foes in opening night of SUNY-New Paltz Tournament

New Paltz, NY–The Sage Colleges' women's volleyball team travelled to SUNY-New Paltz on Friday to compete in the Hawk Invitational. Sage opened the day facing the host Hawks of SUNY-New Paltz in the first match, but fell 3-1 (25-14, 25-27, 25-20, 25-13). The team then faced the Violets of New York University in the night cap, but fell 3-0 (25-10, 25-11, 25-17).  Sage is now 2-4 on the season.

Against New Paltz, Sage's senior tri-captain, setter Rachel Liebig (Hartford, NY/Hartford) tallied 30 setting assists. She added six digs, while Sage's senior outside hitter Michayla Berard (Binghamton, NY/Susquehanna Valley) picked up a team-best 11 kills with four digs.

Junior Alyssa Nellis (Johnstown, NY/Johnstown) added six kills, while senior outside hitter and team tri-captain Sara Campolieta (Fulton, NY/G. Ray Bodley) tallied 11 digs with two kills and an ace. Junior defensive specialist Missy Schneiderman (Middletown, NY/Minisink Valley) connected for 16 digs to lead the Gators in the action.

Against NYU, Campolieta paced the team with her six kills and 16 digs. Berard added four kills. Liebig connected for 14 setting assists, while graduate performer Katy Rimawi (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) added three aces with six digs. Scheiderman connected for eight digs in the contest.

Liebig now has 2,558 career setting assists and joins an exclusive club at Sage as she is one of just three Gators to have achieved the feat and stands No. 3 all-time at Sage. Berard now has 717 career kills and is No. 8 all-time on the Gators' career list.

Sage is back in action on September 10 at the SUNY-New Paltz Invitational and will face Stevens and Fredonia State on at 3 and 5 p.m., respectively.
