Cooney joins 1,000 assist club at Blue Devil Invitational

 

Fredonia, NY--The Sage College's women's volleyball team travelled to Fredonia State on Friday to compete in the Blue Devil Invitational. Sage dropped the first match on the day to Oneonta State, 3-0 (25-17, 25-17, 25-19) and then faced Fredonia State in the nightcap and dropped a decision to the Blue Devils. (3-0, 25-8, 25-15, 29-27).

Pacing the Gators was sophomore setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) as she finished her first match with a significant honor as she had ten setting assists. She became just the seventh player in program history to hand out 1,000 setting assists after starting the match with 993 assists. She collected her 1,000th assist on a kill from freshman Jillian Schwab (Fayetteville, NY/Fayetteville-Manlius).

In the first match, rookie outside hitter Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) connected on six kills. Sage's senior libero, Kelsey Wilson (Schenectady, NY/Notre Dame Bishop Gibbons) racked up six digs against the Red Dragons.

By night's end, Cooney added another 16 setting assists and elevated her career total to 1,029. Putriment added eight digs with seven kills.

Sage returns to action on Saturday, October 1 facing Pitt-Greensburg at noon with another match to be determined in pool play.
