Sage tallies two wins at Newbury Invitational as Augstein-Collins records 250th career win

Brookline, MA---The Sage Colleges women's volleyball team travelled to Newbury College on Friday for a two-day invitational. In the first match of the tournament, the Gators beat the host Nighthawks of Newbury, 3-0 (25-19, 25-16, 25-19). In the nightcap, Sage met Bard College and posted the second 3-0 win over the Raptor this week (25-15, 25-19, 25-13).   

With the victory over Bard, Sage's head coach Sandy Augstein-Collins garnered her 250th career win. Now in her 16th season as a collegiate head coach, she sports a career record of 250-277.

Sage improves to 4-3 and will play a pair of matches in the final day as they look for the tournament title. Action commences on Saturday as Sage faces Lasell College at 1:00 p.m. and Johnston State College at 5 p.m.

Against the Nighthawks, Sage's rookie outside hitter Helen Putriment (Troy, NY/Cobleskill-Richmondville) added a nine kills with 11 digs. Sophomore setter Joanie Cooney (Ballston Lake, NY/Shenendehowa) added 25 setting assists, while rookie middle hitter Stacey Forte (Bay Shore, NY/Brentwood) racked up nine kills.

Against Lasell, the Gators extended the win streak on the season to three matches as they have won three of their last four contests. Putriment, the Skyline Conference's Rookie of the Week, added seven kills with 10 digs and now leads Sage with 68 kills and 133 digs. Cooney added another 24 setting assists for 50 on the afternoon, elevating her season total to 165. She has 701 career assists and is ranked seventh all-time on the Gator career record book. Forte had 12 kills with four serving aces to cap the afternoon's action.
