Feeney honored as Indoor Track and Field Team's Gator of the Year

Albany, NY—Russell Sage College's department of athletics announced their award winners for the 2021-2022 academic year at the annual awards banquet.  In addition to several honors bestowed for athletic and academic excellence, Sage also selected the Gator of the Year Award for the department's 21 varsity sports for the 2021-2022 year.

RSC's sophomore runner Mackenzie Feeney (Saugerties, NY/Saugerties) was honored as the Gator of the Year for Indoor Track and Field. Feeney, who was also saluted by the Empire 8 Women's Track and Field Coaches with a selection as the Sportswoman of The Year Team.

Head Track and Field Coach Nick Jones said of Feeney, "Mackenzie has helped lead the team with the transition to a new coach." He added, "She has learned to trust in the plan and helped others to do the same. Her leadership in this time of transition has helped herself and her teammates set new personal bests and establish school records. She is an extremely supportive teammate and does anything that needs to be done to help contribute to the positive team environment. Her positivity has greatly helped to build team comradery."

At the 2022 Empire 8 Indoor Championship, she finished in seventh place in the 800 meter run in 2:28.14, a school record time. This sophomore co-captain broke her own school record in the mile run as she finished in fifth place with a time of 5:29.83. She was also part of the Gators' school record lineup that took home fifth in the 4 x 400 relay with a time of 4:22.29.

Also a member of the outdoor squad, Feeney was named to the 2022 Empire 8 Outdoor Track and Field Third Team after she took home third place in the 800 meter run with a school record time of 2:27.99.
