Flower breaks another school record at Smith Invitational

Northampton, MA— The Sage Colleges' women's outdoor track and field squad was in action on Saturday at the Smith College Invitational. For the third straight week, the Gators have added a number of school record performances with their hard work. This time both the men and women once again added new marks of success under the leadership of rookie head coach David Taranto.

For the third straight week, Sage's rookie competitor Kerry Flower (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) set another school record. This time Flower won the 10,000 meter run with a time of 38:43.00 to win the race.

Sophomore Sevi Travis (Cohoes, NY/Shaker) picked up third place in the 400 meter run in 1:06.70, while rookie Giannah French (Cherry Plain, NY/Berlin) took home 8th I the same race with her time of 1:17.42.

In the 1,500 meter run, rookie Kristin McAlonen (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) took fifth 5:32.93 and senior co-captain Victoria Opalka (Fort Johnson, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) was seventh in 5:41.01. Opalka added a sixth in the 800 meter run with her time of 2:47.74.

Senior co-captain Sagan Leggett (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) finished in fourth in the women's 5,000 meter run in 21:31.79 and junior Amanda Jones (West Sand Lake, NY/Columbia) was right behind her in fifth with a time of 22:53.72.

In the 100 meter run, rookie Nicole Collazo (New York, NY/Repertory Company HS for the Theatre Arts) took 24th in 15.08 and junior Joanna Tavolaro (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) was next in 28t in 15.81. Collazo added a 20th place showing in the 200 meter run in 31.64. Tavolaro also picked up eighth place in the long jump with her leap of 4.15 meters.

Sage's junior Skylar Van Alstyne (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) took home a third place finish in the discus with her throw of 28.43 meters. She added a fourth place in both the shot put (9.46 meters) and the javelin with her throw of 25.29 meters.  Junior Victoria Fisher (Cazenovia, NY/Cazenovia) was seventh in the javelin (23.00 meters) and 10th in the shotput with her throw of 7.94 meters.

In the women's 4 x 400 relay, Sage was fifth in 4:54.27 as Travis, McAlonen, French and Collazo ran the race for the Gators. 

For the Gator men's team, a school record was set in the men's 4 x 400 relay as they posted a time of 3:43.45 and took home third place. They bettered the mark set in 2016 with a time of 3:50.04.

 

In the 200 meter run, rookie Ramosaj Williams (Hyde Park, NY/Franklin D. Roosevelt) took 13th place in 23.83 and junior Arnoldo Burnett (Bronx, NY/John F. Kennedy) added a 20th in 24.45. The pair were also successful in the 100 meter run as Burnett was 19th in 12.20 and Williams followed in 12.24 to take 22nd place.


In the 800 meter run, sophomore Ellis Richardson (Hudson, NY/Hudson) finished in third in 2:08.06. In the men's 5,000 meter run, senior captain Jarryd Wick (Ayers, MA/E.F. Parker School) took fourth place in 19:47.22. In the javelin throw, Burnett was 8th with his throw of 32.68 meters, while rookie Trevor Hill (Hudson Falls, NY/Hudson Falls) was 18th with a throw of 28.15 meters. Hill was 8th in the discus with his toss of 26.05 meters.

 

In the 100 meter dash, Williams was 12th in 11.96, while also picking up a 10th place showing in the 200 meter dash in 24.09. Burnett was 11th in the 400 meter run in 56.34 and 16th in the 200 meter dash with a time of 24.75.

 

Sage's teams will be back in action on April 13 at the SUNY-Delhi Invitational.
