More records fall for Sage women's track team

SAGE TRACK TEAMS COMPETE AT MT. ST. MARY INVITATIONAL; FLOWER SETS ANOTHER SCHOOL RECORD IN HER SECONDSTRAIGHT MEET, WHILE MORE SCHOOL RECORDS FALL

Marlboro, NY— Sage's women's outdoor track and field squad was in action on Saturday at the Mt. St. Mary College Invitational held at Marlboro High School. By the end of the meet, Sage had broken three school records including two by the women's team.

For the second straight week, Sage's rookie competitor Kerry Flower (Schenectady, NY/Schalmont) set another school record. This time Flower won the 1,500 meter run with a time of 5:11.45. She bettered the mark set in 2014 by Ashley Maresca (5:26.00). Adding the success of the day, sophomore Sevi Travis (Cohoes, NY/Shaker) picked up fourth place in the 800 meter run in 2:35.86 and broke the Sage school record bettering the time of Ashley Maresca from her 2014 race at the Capital District Championship (2:39.00).

Last week, in her first collegiate track meet, Flower broke Sage's school record in the 5,000 meter run and earned Empire 8 Track Athlete of the Week.

In the 800 meter run, rookie Kristin McAlonen (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) took 11th in 2:48.98.  Rookie Kristin McAlonen (Burnt Hills, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) added a time of 2:48.98 and took 11th, while French took 21st in 3:10.18. In the 1,500 meter run, senior co-captain Victoria Opalka (Fort Johnson, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) added a time of 5:39.93 and took sixth place/ 22:03.37 to take 17th place. Senior co-captain Sagan Leggett (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) finished in 9th in the same race in 5:44.92 and junior Amanda Jones (West Sand Lake, NY/Columbia) was right behind her in 10th place in 5:54.92.

Sage's junior Skylar Van Alstyne (Castleton, NY/Maple Hill) had a successful day with a fourth place showing in the shot put with mark a 9.7 meters. She added a sixth place javelin throw with a performance of 22.32 meters and wrapped her day with an eighth place finish in the discus with a throw of 23.54 meters.

Also competing in the 5,000 meter run for Sage was senior co-captain Victoria Opalka (Fort Johnson, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) with a time of 22:03.37 to take 17th place.

In the 100 meter run, junior Joanna Tavolaro (Broadalbin, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) was the first Gator finisher in 18th in 14.77 just ahead of freshman Shanice Dominick (New York, NY/Automotive) who took 20th in 14.95. Rookie Nicole Collazo (New York, NY/Repertory Company HS for the Theatre Arts) took 23rd in 15.06. In the 200 meter run, Collazo was the first Sage place finisher in 21st in 31.38. Dominick was next in 23rd in 31.67 and Tavolaro took 26th in 33.26.

 

Sage's women's track team will be back in action on April 6 at the Smith College Invitational.
