Women's track and field teams picks up 7th place at first Empire 8 Championship

Rochester, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's track and field team wrapped up competition on Saturday at St. John Fisher College in the 2018 Empire 8 Championship. In the women's competition, the Utica College won the team crown with a score of 181 topping Stevens Institute of Technology, which took second with 176. Sage finished in seventh place with four points.

In the women's 4 x 400 meter relay race, Sage finished in seventh place with a time of 4:44.37 behind the work of rookie Avian Pope (New York, NY/Manhattan Center for Science and Math), rookie Olivia Leonard (Waterford, NY/Waterford-Halfmoon), junior Victoria Opalka (Fort Johnson, NY/Broadalbin-Perth), and rookie Heather Dilcher (Colonie, NY/Colonie Central).

In the finals of the 100 meter dash, rookie Tariziana Thompson (Brussels, BE/Brussels American) posted a time of 13.17 and took 8th place. In the 200 meter dash, rookie Avian Pope (New York, NY/Manhattan Center for Science and Math) posted a 10th place finish in 29.55.

In the 800 meter run, Opalka picked up a 14th place in 2:42.70, while also adding a 12th place finish in the 1,500 meter run in 5:35.46. In the 400 meter hurdles, rookie Olivia Leonard (Waterford, NY/Waterford-Halfmoon) took home 11th place in 1:18.29 and Dilcher posted a time of 1:23.52 and finished in 13th place.

Junior captain Sagan Leggett (Valatie, NY/Ichabod Crane) posted a ninth place finish in the 5,000 meter run in 20:39.32.

In the shot put, rookie 
Arianna Burns (Malden Bridge, NY/Tech Valley) had a toss of 6.17 meters and finished in 10
th place. She also finished in 13
th in the discus with her performance of 22.64 meters.
