Sage's Women's Track Team opens year at Wagner Invitational

Staten Island, NY – The Sage Colleges' women's track and field squad opened the 2018 season on Saturday at the Wagner Invitational, a non-team scored meet.

On the women's side, junior Victoria Opalka (Fort Johnson, NY/Broadalbin-Perth) had a banner start to her career at Sage as she was 20th in the 1,500 meter run in 5:30.00 and added a 28th place finish in the 800 meter run in 2:35.00.

Rookie Sevi Travis (Cohoes, NY/Shaker) finished in 27th in the 800 meter run in 2:35.00, while rookie Olivia Leonard (Waterford, NY/Waterford-Halfmoon) posted a time of 5:30.00 to take 22nd in the 1,500 meter run.

Sage's women's 4 x 400 relay team finished in sixth place in 4:38.51 as Leonard, Opalka, Travis and rookie Heather Dilcher (Colonie, NY/Colonie Central) ran the relay for the Gators.

Head coach Zachary Williams noted of the meet, "Head Coach Zachary Williams "As a relatively young and inexperienced team, we faced stiff competition from a field that included a handful of distinguished DI teams. However, everyone did everything that was asked of them, and showed the grit and determination that you'd expect from a much more experienced team. I know that all of my runners have much  better times in their legs, and my throwers and jumpers have longer distances in them. Today, as our first competition of the season, was mostly a rust-buster, and I think we'll see those better performances in the meets to come."

Next up for the team, they will compete on April 14 at the Mt. Holyoke College Invitational.
