Irby's banner day helps Sage records fall at Panther Invitational

Middlebury, VT –The Sage women's outdoor track and field team travelled to Vermont and competed in the Middlebury College Panther Spring Invitational. Along the way, Sage's two teams broke seven school records at the meet.  Middlebury's men's and women's teams won both the team finishes in the five-team meet.

On the women's side of the meet, Junior Nyasia Irby (Great Neck, NY/Manhasset) broke two school records as she was the team's top finisher in both the 200 and 400 meter runs. She posted a record time of 26.91 in the 200 to finish in sixth and to better mark set last season by junior Krystal Lambert (Brooklyn, NY/John Dewey) (27.85). In the 400 meters run, she was also sixth in a record time of 1:04.59, bettering the mark set in 2014 by Ashley Maresca (1:08.27).

Sophomore Sabrena Smith (Woodburne, NY/Tri-Valley Central) was 3rd in the 400 meter hurdles with a school record time of 1:16.86, bettering the old mark she set two weeks ago (1:21.49).

Rounding out the record setting Sage performers on Saturday was rookie Madeleine Herring (Goshen, NY/John Burke Catholic) as she finished 8th in the discus with a mark of 26.69. She bettered the mark of teammate Logan held freshman Logan Thayer (S. Glens Falls, NY/South Glens Falls) from last week with 26.44 meters. Thayer took 10th in the event with her performance of 25.71 meters, while junior Michelle Tanner (Oriskany, NY/Oriskany) was 14th (15.78meters).

In the javelin, Thayer was 14th (20.31m), while Herring picked up 18th with her mark of 14.50 meters. Thayer added 11th in the shot put with her mark of 8.26 meters, while junior Kimberly Craft (Ellenville, NY/Ellenville) picked up 12th (7.55 meters). Herring was next in 15th (6.71meters) and Tanner took home 16th with a mark of 4.91 meters.

In the long jump, Lambert was sixth with performance of 4.6 meters and sophomore Sarah VanAernem (Ballston Spa, NY/Ballston Spa) was next in 9th with mark of 4.28 meters. Smith finished in 11th with an effort of 4.2 meters.

In the women's 4 x 100 meter relay, Sage was fourth with a time of 54.82 as Lambert, VanAernem, Smith and Irby ran the relay. VanAernem also added a 4th place finish in the 100 meter hurdles in 18.12.

Lambert led the Gators in the 100 meter dash as she posted a time of 13.95 to take 10th, while rookie Kadedra Allen (Troy, NY/Troy) picked up 11th in 15.97.  Junior Kelly DiBiaso (Bristol, CT/Saint Paul Catholic) was 12th in 16.07.  DiBiaso finished in 14th in the 200 meters in 34.16, while Allen was next in 15th in 34.44.

In the 800 meter run, rookie Hannah French (Berlin, NY/Berlin) finished in 10th with her mark of 2:57.81, just ahead of senior Ellyn Fisher (Queensbury, NY/Queensbury) who had a time of 3:06.13 and took 11th.  Junior Melissa Grimaldi (Nassau, NY/Columbia) finished in 13th in the same race in 3:13.58.  Fisher capped her day with a 21st place showing in the 1,500 meter run in 6:07.41.

Next up for the Gators is a competition on April 23 at the Wesleyan University J. Elmer Swanson Classic.
