Albany, NY – Russell Sage College's women's tennis team hosted the Mavericks of Medaille University on Saturday afternoon in an Empire 8 match held at the Albany Academy. The Gators delivered the first Empire 8 victory for rookie head coach Michael Branche as RSC beat Medaille, 7-2. The win puts RSC at 3-4 overall and 1-2 in the Empire 8.
RSC's sophomore Emma Nuzzi (Glenville, NY/Burnt Hills-Ballston Lake) and rookie Tirzah Spivey (Clifton Park, NY/Schenectady) recorded at win at No. 1 doubles, while sophomore Gwendolyn Eichen (Moriah Center, NY/Moriah Central) and graduate student Claire Connolly (Little Falls, NY/Little Falls) took No. 2doubles giving the Gators a 2-1 edge heading to singles. Together with senior Priscilla Daquin (Binghamton, NY/Windsor Central), the Gators collected wins at No. 1, 2,3, 4 and six singles.
Eichen is now 5-2 in singles play, while Spivey leads the Gators with a 6-1singles record this fall.
The Gators are back in action on September 28 visiting Plattsburgh State for a 4 p.m. non-conference match.
